2018 Royalty

King Baker Williamson of New Orleans, His Majesty XXVI

The Mystic Krewe of Barkus, the only officially licensed Mardi Gras Krewe for canines, is pleased to introduce their monarch for 2018: King Baker Williamson of New Orleans, His Majesty XXVI.
King Baker, the son of Tim and Jenny Williamson, and the brother of Katie Blair Williamson, is an English Cream Golden Retriever who is excessively handsome. At eight months old, he is already 58 pounds and turns heads every time he goes out in public. Although he is still growing physically, his emotional IQ is off the charts. King Baker came to live with his family at only nine weeks old, but adjusted well. He adores his canine sisters, Luna, who is a beagle mix adopted from Zeus Place, and Lily, who is a Coton de Tulear. But, his human sister, Katie Blair, is his main squeeze.  (King Baker Williamson at home with sisters, Luna, Lily and Katie Blair.)
King Baker is preparing for his reign by getting professional coaching by prior Royals, both human and canine. "I am staying focused on my responsibilities as King of the best Mardi Gras parade for dogs on this planet," said the young King Baker. "I am also looking forward to meeting my Queen and the rest of the Royal Court soon. I have never met a real Queen before," he added.
King Baker Williamson is calling all dogs, whether high born or low born, to get their humans to register on line at www.barkus.org for the parade on Sunday, February 4, 2018. He invites everyone to the pre-pawty parade and post-pawty parade at Armstrong Park that starts at 10:30 a.m. The parade starts promptly at 2pm and follows a 15-block route through the Vieux Carré, stopping at the VIP Reviewing Stand at Good Friends Bar, corner Dauphine and St. Ann, where VIPs will toast the Royal Court. Curious observers are welcome to come watch the parade.
King Baker Williamson knows that the French Quarter will become ground zero for the quest of the Iron Paw with this year's theme: "Game of Bones: Barkus Marks Its Territory."  He expects his canine krewe members will amass like an army in a quest for the dominance they have deserved for so long.

HER MAJESTY XXVI, Luna Settoon

Queen Luna Settoon is the daughter of Alden and Brittany Settoon of New Orleans.  She is a gorgeous Border Collie who was adopted from the St. Tammany SPCA where she ended up after wandering the roads on the Northshore totally alone. Her parents say it did take some time for her to overcome of fear of almost everything and is now truly the embodiment of unwavering courage.

With the Queen's adoption, she was catapulted into canine royalty. Her uncle, Blue Settoon, was a former King of Barkus and she served as Grand Marshall last year. Former King Blue is reportedly giving her much advice about how to be a great monarch.

"I have been told to stop begging for food at the dinner table and to control my stares when I want something," said Queen Luna. "Maybe Uncle Blue means well, but I frankly do not see why I need to change at all just because I am the Queen. I believe most of my subjects will be able to relate to me and any perceived imperfections will hopefully be embraced," she added.

Fans of Queen Luna's confidence and beauty can find her running up to 12 miles a day along the Couturie Forest Trails in City Park and sometimes in the Spillway. Queen Luna is anxiously awaiting the day she gets to meet her King, munch out at Galatoire's with him and celebrate the wonders of canine life after adoption.

Grand Marshal Bristol

Grand Marshall (GM) Bristol "Brie" Mahana, a French Bulldog, is the daughter of Ralph and Ashley Mahana of New Orleans, Louisiana. GM Bristol faced some health issues related to her heart when she was young, but it has never kept her from serving on the Barkus Royal Court over the last two years. She is a natural beauty who enjoys watching Nickelodeon and shopping for outfits to add to her expansive wardrobe. GM  Bristol is named after the hotel where her parents spent their honeymoon in Paris, France, and she appreciates that. She is the sparkle of her parents lives and can often be found at the Windsor Court Hotel where she goes to work with her dad. GM hopes to have an Instagram and Facebook account as soon as her parents allow it so that she can post pictures often and stay in contact with other Barkus Krewe members year-round.

Princess Royale Suzie Beshears

Princess Royale Suzie Beshears is a 3 year old yellow lab who was born in New York and, at  8 weeks of age, moved to NEADS World Class Service Dogs in Princeton, New Jersey to train to be an Assistance Animal. At 2 years old she graduated from NEADS and moved to New Orleans to work in Trauma Response with the kids of our city. While she misses the snow of her home town, she does enjoy playing ball at the Dog Park, cuddling with kids, eating (fruits and veggies) and playing on bayou St. John.

Her job at Orleans Parish Juvenile Court includes providing comfort to kids going through legal proceedings such as parental rights termination, adoptions, delinquency proceedings, forensic interviews and community events to name a few of her duties.

The Mystic Krewe of Barkus salutes Princess Royale Suzie and her compassionate work with children in need.

Grand Duke Nike

This is Grand Duke Nike’s 6th trip to Barkus and his second reign as a Duke. He is a prime example of how a rescued dog can rise up from life in a horrific puppy mill to life as a Grand Duke! Duke Nike helps his homeless friends by raising money for local animal shelters and rescues in South MS as well as supporting human organizations. He also has his own Facebook page to help raise animal awareness.❤️

All Hail Grand Duke Nike!

Duke Andy

In 2010 Duke Andy found his forever home as he was adopted from the Dubuque Regional Humane Society.

Duke Andy is a mixed poodle-terrier-lab with a few other things. Duke Andy has been through obedience training at PetCo and has also been trained and certified as a Therapy Dog through Therapy Dog International. Duke Andy has been visiting Nursing Homes in Dubuque, Iowa since 2012. When he moved to Louisiana in the summer of 2014 he began regularly visiting nursing homes on the North Shore area of Lake Pontchartrain. Since he has been in Louisiana Duke Andy has participated in Barkus as a Lucky Dog!

All Hail Duke Andy!

Duke Parker

Duke Parker is a Jack Russell Terrier who was found by his daddy at Pet Fest in Lafreniere Park hence the name Parker. He loves chewing Bluetooths and eyeglasses and beating up on his siblings. Duke Parker is very excited to be a Duke again this year!

All Hail Duke Parker!

Duchess Velvet

Duchess Velvet was a rescue who was so terrified of people that they considered her near-feral.  At 7 months old, she was brought to a Chow-Chow rescue organization in Canada called Merlin's Hope, and a few months later found her fur-ever home with Howie and Lori Turoff who love her more than anything in the world.  She is affectionate (for a Chow) and happy and loves living in the Marigny where spends every waking hour obsessing over the neighborhood cats.  She is only 5 years old, but this is her 4th Barkus parade and she pledges never to miss one for the rest of what promises to be a long, happy, healthy life.  Hail Barkus and Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler.

All Hail Duchess Velvet!
