Duke Nizi Tringali
Nizi (neet-see) Tringali's story begins amid the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. At the end of 2020 he was found as a stray puppy wandering the streets of New Orleans' French Quarter. His life took a fortunate turn on New Year's Day 2021, when he followed Michelle Gielis home, marking the start of his journey from a life of uncertainty to one filled with love and community. Despite efforts to locate his original owners, it became apparent that Nizi needed a new, permanent home.
Named after the Italian phrase "Nuovo Inizi," meaning "New Beginnings," Nizi's name reflects not only his personal transformation but also the broader societal shifts occurring at the time. When Michelle realized she couldn't provide for the energetic young pit bull, she reached out to Rick Tringali. Rick, who lives in a garden condo complex in the Marigny, welcomed Nizi into his family, securing the pup's place in a loving environment.
Nizi quickly became a local celebrity in his new neighborhood, particularly among the artists and door attendants on Frenchmen Street. His beaming happiness, unique name, and touching backstory has made him a beloved canine celebrity to locals and visitors alike. His rags to riches journey culminated in 2023 with his participation in the Mystic Krewe of Barkus, where he paraded as a royal Duke through the very streets where he was once a stray
His bond with Margarita “Dahhling” Bergen, a resident in the same complex and beloved socialite, adds another layer to his story. Margarita, who had tragically lost her Chihuahua Chiquita before Chiquita's scheduled reign as Queen of Barkus years ago, found a new way to connect with the festivities through Nizi. This year, Nizi returns to the spotlight, continuing his reign as Duke. Alongside Margarita, he will once again grace the streets from which he came. His journey from a stray puppy to a celebrated member of the Mystic Krewe of Barkus is a testament to the power of community and the enduring charm of New Orleans.
